Task 4c: TO BE FINISHED

Task 4c: NOT FINISHED

“What is the correct behaviour in a workplace?”

I picked 3 people I know from the industry who work with different ages along with asking my SIGs Facebook group to see how they managed behaviour in a classroom/rehearsal/workspace. Iv asked them all the same 3 questions,

-           -How do your students/members of your class/rehearsal behave overall?
What are the main causes that change the behaviour of the members of the class/rehearsal, if it changes?
-How do you deal with this professionally, does this change the structure of the class/rehearsal?

I understand that the difference between a workplace and a classroom would be the persons age, whether they made the decision to attend themselves, if they are being paid to be there or paying to be there, but I wanted to see the differences in their answers.

(Ruben De Monte, 26, East London, Teaches women 25-55, Ballet bare, Box & burn, Fitness based classes.)

-       = In general members of the class are very attentive and willing to work, most people invest their time and money into coming to these classes so they always try to make the most of it.
-     --  I would say I can see different behaviours when teaching at the beginning of the week, on a Monday morning for example when members of the class are fresh after the weekend and ready to start the week, the level of energy is much higher and members have a better awareness of body and breath. Towards the end of the week, especially Thursday and Friday evenings the mood of the class is lower so it’s up to me to bring it up and motivate people with my attitude and choice of music always helps.
-     --  I think its important to understand from the start the level of energy from the members in order to deliver a class that best suits them on the day. Having a group that wants to work hard at the beginning of the week and as less motivation towards the end of the week definitely changes the structure of my classes. I introduce respectively more strength exercises or longer stretch periods where necessary.

(Hannah Evans, 24, South Wales, Teaches children 3-16, Movement & choreography around schools along with her own company.)
 (tbc)

(Emma Harrower, 30, London, Works as a freelancer with dancers 20-35)

- Everyone works in a friendly and professional manor. On occasions where I need clarification on choreography ect, someone is always happy to help.
- It can be stressful if there are any last minute changes to a show. People tend to be more focused and concentration levels are heightened, which can sometimes cause anxiety.
- This doesn't change the structure of the class/rehearsal as we are all professional. I try to remain calm and focus on the job in hand.

(SIGs Group, Mdx BAPP Students, Teach/work with children all ages,)
Question 2:

From the SIGs group conversation the main points I gathered that change a persons behaviour in a classroom is loss in concentration in younger students, a confidence change in teenagers and their careless attitude or low self esteem, the interference of other members of the class.

We also spoke about the use of imagery, how this differs when working with children/adults. Many of the group teach a younger audience so it was interesting to see how they related the methods to adults. Most said that they still use imagery when working with adults but it is portrayed in a different way, so using it for a class technique but not to gain control over the class like you do with children.

Task 4a Continued, New questions

Task 4A Continued, New questions

After my campus session I was a little lost with identifying questions to do with Behaviour, Since then I have looked back on Module 1 and my practice again and come up with a series of questions that I’m interested in looking further into.

-     -  What is behaviour?
-      - What is the correct behaviour in a workplace?
-       -What affects people’s behaviour?
-       -How has my behaviour changed since graduating, and how was my behaviour growing up?

-       -How does behaviour impact learning?

Campus Session 20/10/17

Campus Session 20/10/17

Attending my first campus session was exciting but I was also apprehensive, as Id not met anyone from my course or discussed ideas together before.

We were a mix of M1,2 and 3 with Adesola and Helen, so we could get an understanding of where everyone was in their module and the topics and questions we had come up with so far. It was refreshing to hear the ideas of others in the group and thought their topics were really interesting. I thought I had decided on some questions surrounding behaviour but it turned out the more I tried to talk about my ideas I realised I hadn't actually got a clear question to do with behaviour yet.

Adesola drew an image that was really helpful, it explained that the big topic needs to have questions coming off it and overall they need to have a pathway to my life and practice.

I wrote down any useful words and information everyone was feeding back so I came away with more ideas to explore behaviour again. The most important message from the session was your question needs to relate back to you.

From this I plan to go back again to M1 to look at my thoughts from my practice and see if I can generate more clear questions fro this. The session was really helpful and I'm looking forward to reading blogs on this.

Any info on the last hour of the session would be great as I had to leave for work.

Task 4b

Task 4b
Developing my ideas:

Now that Iv based my questions on Behaviour I wanted to explore the areas I can gain information from.

Developing my SIGS I’ve found similar blogs and joined groups that have an interest in methods of teaching. The first topic I wanted to explore that changes the behaviour of a class is Age. As I work with colleagues in my own age bracket (20-35), its interesting to read blogs that are aimed at younger students and a few behaviour points on how they react to situations.

I wanted to look at people I’m closer to, my boyfriend is also a dancer and teaches ballet/fitness to adults, normally women around London. I’ve joined a few of his classes to identify his teaching techniques and the difficulty he faces as English is not his first language. This is something I want to continue to explore by sitting in on the class and examining the members of the class behaviour. I will be challenges by the ethical consideration of this as I gain consent to sit in on a class.

My closest friend from Wales has her own dance school and is a freelancer around schools in the area. She also works with children with learning difficulties. I plan to have an audio recording of what its like for her to be travelling and teaching different ages and abilities and the structure of her classes, seeing how these differ to mine.

Next I wanted to gain material from other sources such as books on behaviour, the physiology of behaviour and teaching methods.
I plan to visit Middlesex University library and my own library in Hackney to see what material is relevant.

Looking forward to the campus session tomorrow,
Alicia

Skype call with Helen, am I on the right track?

Skype call with Helen – 13/10/17
Am I on the right track?

After missing yet again another group Skype session due to work, I had a call with Helen Kindred to go over my work and thoughts so far and to get some feedback on how to proceed with Task 4.

I ran over my behavioural ideas that had emerged from M1 and suggested some ways I could identify these in my practice. Interviewing fellow colleagues that teach different age/behaviour groups will help me gain a better understanding how behaviour impacts learning and the technique required in different classes.
Helen talked about ethical consideration and the consent I would need to have in order to watch and interview different people in their work place and the consideration of the members of the class.

As there is a campus session next week, which I’m really interested in going to, Helen said to make a trip to the library whilst I’m there to gain some reading material to help with my understanding of behaviour.
This was a really helpful chat that reassured me about my ideas and I’m looking forward to continuing my research.

Task 4a: Developing Lines of Inquiry

Module 2
Task 4A: Developing Lines of Inquiry

After reading through the Handbook for Module 2, the first section of Reader 4 and reviewing blogs I got straight back into where I left off before summer. Even though the content of the Readers is tricky to understand in parts I feel I have a slightly more clear vision of Module 1 and how I can carry this into Module 2.

Planning forward for Task 4 I need to explore, evaluate and understand my practice by questioning my own theories and of others into developing lines of inquiry. Looking back at Module 1, Task 2D I explored questions that made me think about other peoples mood, actions, ability and how I can understand and deal best with my learning needs in my work place.

The main points I took from that task were what worked/didn’t work for me with different colleagues behaviour, and the planning tools I used to address this. I want to continue to explore what methods work when teaching but my first question is how these methods adapt when something changes such as the age, genre ect. I also wanted to look at myself and see how I can improve my own behaviour when teaching. Over the next few weeks I will be looking at my practice in different ways and experimenting with teaching to see if I can set a structure to my classes.

Behaviour in the English Oxford Dictionary is defined as,

"the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others."

Overall I want to explore the behaviour of myself and others surrounding me,

How behavioural issues affect my teaching techniques,

How I can adapt to this,

Any feedback, questions on this post would be really helpful so i know if I'm on the right track with my thoughts,

Module 2 - Starting back after Summer

Module 2 - Starting back after the summer break.

After completing Module 1, receiving my grades and feedback, it was time to think over the summer how I can apply this information when starting Module 2.

I found working my grade out from M1 quite difficult to understand but my feedback was positive and reassuring that I was on the right track when presenting my work throughout my blog and in my Critical Reflection.  The main points to focus on from my feedback along with my own thoughts of improvement are not to repeat myself. Paula once said in a Skype meeting that I have to state the obvious and explain the ideas that help me understand my practice. Ill do this by finding out what works for me before writing in my blog. Also adding more appendices in such as video clips and tasks that I have found useful throughout my learning. Module 1 really related to my PP as I was working in a show weekly, applying theories and techniques helped me to understand myself in my workplace and my colleagues, which has gained time wasting and conflict when on a busy schedule. I will continue to work this way and see how I can develop this into my professional inquiry.

Moving into Module 2 I know will be more challenging so making sure I attend the group discussions on and off campus is very important. Also making time to comment on more people’s blogs to help me develop my own ideas is a task I will try to improve on. Continuing to read through M2 handbook and Readers I will get an understanding of what M2 has to offer.

Looking Forward to the winter semester.
